Gain Research Experience at BTEC

A student performs a task in BTEC's analytical lab
BTEC provides undergraduates who are majoring in engineering the opportunity to gain research experience—and get paid for it—through the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Research Experience Undergraduate (REU) program

BTEC accepts applications on an ongoing basis for its Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, which is funded by the College of Engineering to provide research opportunities for its undergraduate students. If you are selected to participate in this program, you will actively engage in a research project under the mentorship of a participating faculty member and receive a financial stipend.

Projects can be conducted during the following terms:

  • Spring: Jan. 1 through mid-May
  • Summer: May 16 through Aug. 15
  • Fall: Aug. 16 through Dec. 31

What's in it for you? Program activities

BTEC is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. As such, its REU program provides undergraduates with research opportunities that may not be readily available elsewhere. In addition to receiving a financial stipend, students participating in BTEC's REU program have the opportunity to work on independent research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor within the core areas of biomanufacturing:

  • Analytical development (e.g., assay development and in-process testing)
  • Downstream processing (e.g., chromatographic optimization, process optimization)
  • Upstream processing (e.g., cell scale-up and optimization), and
  • Cell-line development

Participants will also have the opportunity to present their research results at a poster session at BTEC and the NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium in August. In addition, students may be able to publish results from their research in a refereed journal or present them at a conference.

Eligibility

BTEC's REU program is open to current or rising college sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have declared a major in the College of Engineering. Applicants will be evaluated based on their statement of interest and GPA. Prior research experience is preferred but not required. BTEC encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including minorities and people with disabilities.

How to apply for the REU program

The application requires that you upload a resume and provide a short personal statement indicating your career and educational goals, why you are interested in science and research, and why you think this research experience would benefit you. Include any laboratory skills, research experience, awards, honors, or extracurricular activities you would like us to know about. Please also discuss preferred areas of research based on our four core areas:

  • Analytical development
  • Upstream processing
  • Downstream processing, and
  • Cell-line development

Internship program

Internship opportunities may be available for students who do not qualify for the REU programs, such as non-engineering majors, or for students not seeking a research-focused experience. Use the link below to submit an application and indicate your interest in an internship rather than the REU program.
