Distance Education

By combining distance education technologies with instruction in its state-of-the-art laboratories, BTEC extends educational opportunities to those located across the state and region. At present, BTEC offers certain courses in a blended format, which combines face-to-face instruction with computer-based learning. In these blended courses, students participate in labs on site at BTEC, while lectures, readings, interactive multimedia materials, online discussions and quizzes can be provided through NC State’s online learning management systems. Students can access these online materials 24/7 from any location with an Internet connection.

Enabling students to complete work independently and on a flexible schedule while minimizing the number of trips to campus makes blended learning an attractive option for those employed full-time or full-time students with busy schedules.

Currently, BEC 480, cGMP Fermentation Operations is routinely offered in a blended format.

In addition, BTEC faculty have developed a series of four blended courses for the FDA Office of Regulatory Affairs. In these courses, FDA trainees read materials and complete activities online over a four-week period and then travel to BTEC for three days of hands-on laboratory activities. Similar blended or fully online courses can be developed for interested industry partners.

In spring 2010, BTEC anticipates offering a fully online course dealing with regulatory affairs.
