About BTEC

The life force of tomorrow's industry

A unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center, the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry and create the best-trained, most industry-focused workforce possible.

Founded to help establish, attract and expand biomanufacturing in North Carolina and thus drive innovation and job creation, BTEC is located on North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus in Raleigh. It operates under the auspices of the university's College of Engineering (COE). BTEC operates two facilities: the 77,700-gross-square-foot main building and the approximately 5,000-gross-square-foot BTEC Annex in the Keystone Science Center. The two facilities feature more than $18 million of industry-standard equipment and a simulated cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) pilot plant facility capable of producing biopharmaceutical products using cell growth and expression, recovery, and purification processes. Undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals come to BTEC for hands-on learning with the latest biomanufacturing technologies.

Collaborations and Partnerships

To carry out its mission, BTEC collaborates with a variety of organizations and participates in programs both within and beyond NC State. These include the following:

AIM-Bio

Accelerated Innovation in Manufacturing Biologics (AIM-Bio) is a five-year, $27 million collaborative program between NC State, BTEC, and the Technical University of Denmark, which has been funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. AIM-Bio will establish a world-class program in bioprocess research and development and workforce training that focuses on biomanufacturing science and technologies for the future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

BioMADE

BTEC is a founding member of the new BioIndustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem (BioMADE), a nonprofit created by the Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC). BioMADE, headquartered at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, will collaborate with public and private entities to advance sustainable and reliable bioindustrial manufacturing technologies. BioMade is a Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII), a national network of institutes designed to foster innovation and accelerate U. S. advanced manufacturing. BIOMade is funded by $87M from the U.S. Department of Defense, combined with over $187M in non-federal cost-share from 31 companies, 57 colleges and universities, six nonprofits, and two venture capital groups across 31 states.

BMIG

The Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Interest Group (BMIG) is an initiative of NC State's Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) and BTEC. Established in the spring of 2020, BMIG brings together regional specialists in biopharmaceutical manufacturing to provide students, post-docs, researchers, and scientists valuable networking opportunities to share and gain knowledge and expertise.

CESMII

Created in 2017, the Clean Energy, Smart Manufacturing, Innovation Institute (CESMII) is another Manufacturing USA institute with which BTEC is affiliated. CESMII’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of Smart Manufacturing through sensing, control, modeling, analytics and platform technologies. BTEC is part of CESMII's Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) at NC State, which was announced in April 2020. The objective of the SMIC is to link manufacturers, industrial technology vendors, systems integrators, and equipment providers with academia, demonstrating and driving research and innovation that scales to all of U.S. manufacturing.

NIIMBL

BTEC has led or participated in numerous NIIMBL projects since the institute's launch in 2017. The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) seeks to accelerate biopharmaceutical innovation, support the development of standards that enable more efficient and rapid manufacturing capabilities, and educate and train a world-leading biopharmaceutical manufacturing workforce, fundamentally advancing U.S. competitiveness in this industry. A part of the Manufacturing USA network, NIIMBL is funded through a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. Department of Commerce and leverages additional support from industry, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and the states of Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

BTEC also works with other industry groups, including the NC Biosciences Organization (NCBIO), the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC), and NCBC's Biomanufacturing and Process Development Group (BPD).
